Who we are

Passing Places is operated by Mark Finlay in Ireland ("we"). It is a research project, not a commercial service, and it is not yet an app you can download. These terms apply to the website at passingplaces.app and to the research instance behind its sign-in.

Using the site

You may read the public pages freely. The research instance is available only to invited accounts; an account is personal, you are responsible for what is done with it, and we may withdraw it at any time. Do not attempt to gain access you have not been given, to disrupt the service, or to extract the corpus by automated means.

The content and its sources

The stories, records and narrations on Passing Places are drawn from public sources and from software that summarises them. They are offered for interest and research. They are faithful to their sources, which are often historical works of their time, and may contain errors, omissions or views their authors held; nothing here is advice, and nothing here should be relied on for navigation, safety or any decision. We do not warrant accuracy, completeness or availability.

Sources and their terms include: monument, wreck and building records of the National Monuments Service and the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage, published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence; place names from the Placenames Database of Ireland (Logainm); map data from OpenStreetMap contributors, under the Open Database Licence; elevation data from Copernicus EU-DEM and the U.S. Geological Survey; and public-domain books. Where a source requires attribution it is given on the page or in the record.

Our material

The name Passing Places, the mark, the design and the software are ours. Narrations and summaries generated by the project are ours except for the source passages they rest on, which keep their own status. You may quote briefly with attribution; do not republish the corpus or present the site's output as your own.

Liability

To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for any loss arising from use of the site or reliance on its content. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law.

Changes and law

We may change the site, or these terms, at any time; the date above shows the current version. These terms are governed by the law of Ireland, and the courts of Ireland have jurisdiction. Questions about them can be sent through the contact page.
